Build Your Own Chicken Coop
Chicken coop plans will enable you to build your own chicken house whether you live in town or country. Raising chickens will provide you with fresh eggs every day, and they are just so much better tasting than store bought eggs. Even city dwellers can keep some chickens in the backyard in many places now. Many cities are now passing bylaws to allow chickens in backyards.
This makes good sense since so many people now want fresh food free from drugs and contaminants which are found in many commercially produce foods including eggs. You will also get a supply of chicken manure which is great fertiliser for your garden. Feed your hens quality foods and you will get quality eggs for your table.
To build a chicken coop or to buy one is a big decision. The easy way is to buy a coop and have it delivered to your backyard. All sizes are available, but the main problem is of course the cost. Prices can run from several hundred dollars to well over $1000 for a modest sized chicken coop, and a lot more for a big one. This is a lot of money to spend in order to get a few fresh eggs per day from a handful of chickens in your city backyard. Even for tjhose who live in the country and can have a big flock of chickens this can be a large outlay of cash.
The alternative is to build your own chicken coop and save a lot of money. you need not be an expert carpenter really. If you can use a saw and a hammer and nails you can build a good chicken coop. Your only cost is for materials which cost a fraction of the price of a ready built chicken house.
The best way by far to do this is to get a set of detailed plans with instructions and possibly videos to show you how to do the job. You can find a number of dealers on the internet who sell very good chicken coop plans. We ourseves have built several chicken houses from such plans without any problems. We particularly recommend "How To Build A Chicken Coop In 3 Days" which we found to be really excellent with clear instructions, pictures and videos. The chicken coops we built are strong, warm and predator proof.
When you build your chicken house from these plans it is done properly. The chickens are safe and comfortable in it, and will lay more eggs for you as a result. A happy hen will always be a good laying hen.
The final thing that chickens must have is good food and room to scratch and forage. This is achieved with a wire framed extension to the chicken coop. This must have at least 4 square feet or more for each hen in the hen house. This gives them some room they can call their own instead of being crowded together in too little space. Chickens definitely will lay more eggs when they have enough room so that they can forage for seeds, worms and insects in the ground.
